September First Friday
September 7, 2018 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Join us September 7th for First Friday Featuring Yuliya Helgesen-Thompson!
Yuliya Helgesen-Thompson was born in Russia and raised in Germany. She received her MFA in Russia and shortly thereafter moved to Alaska in 1997. Since her move to Alaska she has been working as an Alaskan artist and art instructor. Yuliya has worked with different galleries and spaces all over Anchorage and with students from kindergarten all the way up to senior citizens. She has also done numerous Artist-in- Residence programs for different schools over the years. Another one of her artistic exploits is dancing with her Russian cultural dance group Sudarushka. Yuliya also designed their traditional Russian costumes.
“Routine has never been a statement for my painting or my life. I usually begin each piece with a sculptural idea. After the surface is sculpted and dried, I fuse color into the sculpted surface. I use contemporary and modern painting styles mixed with traditional and ancient techniques. Visually, I want my paintings to speak musically through the crafting of shapes, colors, surfaces and space. I am not concerned with creating realistic portrayals of a subject. Instead, I use nature as a point of departure and focus on how a scene can be used as a vehicle to express color and shape.”
This new art show is a collection of beautiful pastel pieces reflecting sincere love and emotion through nature, my garden, and spiritual birds. The style of all the paintings is abstract impressionism.
